The Umaid Bhawan Palace is situated on the highest peak of Jodhpur – the blue city. The palatial structure stretches upto an area of 26 acres. One of the largest private residences across the globe, the Umaid Bhawan serves as a home to the royal family of Jodhpur.
Far-famed for its grandeur, the golden-hued palace draws its name from Maharaja Umaid Singh, an erstwhile Maharaja of Jodhpur. The palace is built on a grand scale in the Art Deco style. The construction of this regal structure took 15 years to complete and take the shape that it assumes today.
This massive palace was designed by the well-known Edwardian designer Henry Lanchester. In order to include the traditions of Hindu architecture in his concept, Lanchester went over to see the Hindu mountain temples so as to gain inspiration. The architecture of the palace reflects a blend of the eastern style of architecture with the western architectural pattern. The towers in the palatial building clearly reflect the age-old Rajput tradition that is alive in the hearts of the Rajasthani population till date. The influence drawn by the Renaissance can be seen in its 105-feet high cupola. The intricate artwork and the lavish interiors are done in the Art Deco style. Exotic murals of Stefan Norblin, a renowned artist, complement the tastefully restored interiors perfectly.
In order to restore the charm of the palace, it has recently been converted into a Heritage Hotel. One amongst the most spectacular palace hotels, the 347 room hotel displays sheer luxury. Savour its grandeur by stepping into the world of royal ambiance. Travel back into the privileged lifestyle of the bygone era. The Umaid Bhawan Palace seems nothing less than a work of the fairies!
