Jodhpur, an imperial city of Rajasthan echoes loud the tales of antiquity of the bygone era. With Mehrangarh Fort on the west and Umaid Bhawan Palace on the eastern side, Jodhpur depicts grandeur at its best. But it is the peace and barrenness prevailing in Jodhpur that pulls the tourists in large numbers to Jodhpur every year. And it is also because of this barrenness in Jodhpur that Mehrangarh Fort looks more magical than it actually is, larger than life. The fort literally dominates the landscape of Jodhpur so much so that it puts in shade the other things of the state.
Seven gates have to be crossed to reach the fort. The gates till date bear the marks of the various battles fought in the bygone era. The second gate still stands as a witness to the canon ball hits by attacking armies of Jaipur during wars. One of the gates is called Jayapol, meaning victory. It was built by Maharaja Man Singh to commemorate his victories over Jaipur and Bikaner armies. Another gate, Fattehpol, again meaning victory, was built by Maharaja Ajit Singh as a celebration for defeating the Mughals.

One of the palaces in the complex of the fort, the Moti Mahal or the Pearl Palace, displays the royal throne of Jodhpur - 'the Sringar Chowki'. Exquisite galleries and beautiful temples are added attractions of the fort. To the left of the Mehrangarh Fort is the Chhatri of a soldier, Kirat Singh Soda. This spot is the one where he fell while defending the fort against the armies of Amber.
