Haridwar: Holiest Hindu City in Uttarakhand
Lauded as the holiest city of Uttarakhand, Haridwar is a sacred gateway to the four main Hindu pilgrimages in the state of Uttarakhand. In fact, it is located at the starting point of the journey from River Yamuna and River Ganga. It is one of the pertinent reasons why Haridwar was previously called as Gangadwára. The religious, colourful and chaotic feel to Haridwar Tourism is bestowed at Har ki Pauri Ghat, where pilgrims in hundreds and thousands, take a ritualistic dip in the holy Ganga River. It is believed that this pious Ganga River was bought down on earth by the legendary meditation of King Bhagiratha. Even the Chinese traveller Huan Tsang, has mentioned about Haridwar in his significant travel writings.
There are several tourist attractions in Haridwar, especially after the regular influx of foreign tourists visiting India to experience spirituality and religious fervour. The Chandi Devi Temple, located on the Neel Parvat, is dedicated to the worship of Goddess Chandi. Interestingly, it was the King of Kashmir, who constructed the temple in 1929 AD. The Mansa Devi Temple in Haridwar on the top of Bilwa Parvat, is dedicated to Goddess Mansa, the one who is revered for fulfilling desires. Apart from the temples with religious overtones, the multi-storeyed Bharat Mata Mandir is dedicated to Mother India and the main protagonists of India. Even the view from the Sapta Rishi Ashram, where seven sages had meditated for salvation, is quite ethereal. Hence, all in all, the tourist attractions in Haridwar have their unique identity, which must be explored.
