Port Blair: From Colonial to Capital City
Earlier a colonial island city, today Port Blair or 'PB' is the capital city of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It is fringed by the rugged coastline and is interspersed with a colourful mix of Indian Ocean inhabitants like Bengalis, Tamils, Nicobarese and Burmese. Port Blair remained hidden for a long time from tourists but today it is emerging as a famous destination for adventure lovers and the history-buffs. The city is the best example of scenic beauty coalesced with a dramatic history. It played an important role in the Indian freedom struggle. The freedom fighters were arrested by the Britishers and kept in solitary confinement.
The major attractions include Chidiya Tapu, a superb picnic spot echoing with the chirping of different kinds of bird. Zsi Museum here maintained by the Zoological Survey of India houses a research library and exhibits a huge variety of corals, sponges, butterflies and centipedes in addition to other animals. For those in love in with the water sports, Water Sports Complex is a must-visit for them. One can indulge here in sports like water skiing, speed boating, and wind surfing. The pristine blue Corbyn's Cove Beach is another place of attraction in Port Blair. It is basically a small curve backed by palms. You can rent a scooter or take an autorickshaw to reach here. The best time to visit Port Blair is between October to March. Beach Festival held in April is also a sought after time to explore the enthralling Port Blair.
