Puri: The Religious Sea-Town of Odisha
Puri, better known as Jagannath Puri, is the quaint old town in Odisha. Located on the eastern coast of Odisha, over-looking the vast blues of Bay of Bengal, Puri offers an impressive view of the ethereal sunrise and sunset. History of Puri Tourism dates back to the time when Puri was inhabited by Sabaras- a pre-Dravidian and pre-Aryan clan which belonged to the Austro-Asiatic family. Puri became an important destination for Hindu pilgrims by 12th century. It has seen the rise and fall of many empires like Ganga Dynasty, Maurya Dynasty, Mughals, Marathas and even the Afghans. These vestiges and cultural transformations add to the value of tourist attractions in Pure and their ambiance.
There are several sightseeing attractions in Puri, however, the famous 65 m high temple of Lord Jagannath dominates the list. It is one of the India's four most sacred places of Hindu pilgrimages. This temple was built in 12th century A.D. by Anantavarman Chodaganga as the place to offer prayers to Lord Vishnu. Over one million pilgrims flock here, every year, to this pious place to participate in the Festival of Rath Yatra in Puri. Other temples in the town are the Gundicha, the Lokenath and the Daria Mahabir. There are several holy tanks also present here like Narendra, Markandeya and Sweta Ganga. Finally after visiting all these places one can always sit along the beautiful beaches of Puri and enjoy the local street food, dahibara aloodum. So drench in the speciality of Puri and explore its enchanting destinations.
